Alum Award Recipients

Romeo Garcia, MA ’87
Distinguished Achievement Award

Romeo Garcia was recognized for his lifelong dedication to the education of young women and underrepresented students. While at Mills, he was involved in Upward Bound, the TRIO program, and the Julia Morgan School for Girls, directing the lives of countless young people on their educational path. As the current co-founder and executive director of Oakland’s chartered high school ARISE, he has created an environment that is dedicated to the academic and personal success of Oakland’s young people. His creativity, passion, and committment to his work exemplify the ideals of a Mills College education.

In his concluding remarks, Garcia stated, “With the help of many, I have become a ‘Mills Man.’ I believe in the power of education for women and men, because it gives us all a higher—and very different—platform from which to see and engage in the world.”

Garcia also noted that he was “honored to be the first man to receive an alumnae award.” He quipped, “I asked who the other men were who've received alumnae awards, thinking I would be joining the good company of maybe Dave Brubeck, but was told that I am the first. So I guess Dave Brubeck can join the club next year.”
