The Board of Governors’ Anti-Homophobia Statement

October 18, 2021

Founded in 1879, the Alumnae Association of Mills College (AAMC) is an independent, diverse, and inclusive community of more than 25,000 graduates, worldwide. The Board of Governors is the managing body of the AAMC. Mills College is known for its social justice mission of which LGBTQIA rights are a critical element.

The Board of Governors of the AAMC stands firmly against homophobia and transphobia and commits to consciously taking responsibility to advance fair, non-discriminatory policies and practices that reflect our long-standing principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The Board is relaunching the LGBTQ affinity group /committee to ensure our commitment and invite those who have been disenfranchised back into our community as well as to protect the future Mills students. The AAMC has a duty to uphold a legacy of forward-thinking and activism.

The Board of Governors embraces the safety, inclusion, and rights of the LGBTQIA community. We pledge to actively work to create an environment free of implicit and explicit harassment and discrimination. In seeking true equity, we commit to creating space for sincere dialogue and growth where bigotry in all its forms is not tolerated. We will progress toward these goals by holding ourselves accountable for ensuring inclusive Board practices, protocols, composition, and actions, and reviewing, assessing, and modifying any relevant initiatives, policies, and practices that do not advance diversity, equity, and inclusion.
